How much does a tub to shower conversion cost in NJ?

The short answer
A tub-to-shower conversion starts at $6,000.
That price is for the whole shower area done, not just pulling the tub out: the tub comes out, a new pan goes in, the walls are waterproofed, and the walls and floor are tiled. It is a starting price. It does not include the tile itself, shower glass or plumbing.

What the starting price covers

What makes your price higher or lower
How big the shower is. More wall and floor space means more sealing and more hours. Replacing the tub for a parent or anyone who struggles to step over the wall? See walk-in showers for seniors.
The tile you pick. Big tiles in straight rows go in fastest (how shower tile is sealed and set). Small tiles, or patterns set on an angle, take a lot longer to cut and lay, and that time shows up in the price.
Whether the plumbing moves. Leaving the drain where it is keeps costs down. Moving it means opening the floor, and plumbing is quoted separately.
Niches, shelves and a curbless floor. Each one is quoted per job.
The glass. It is not in our price. A door or panel is a separate hire with a glass company, so budget for it on its own.
What we find behind the walls. If the tear-out turns up water damage or a rotted floor, that's extra work nobody could see beforehand. It's the main reason we look at the space in person before quoting rather than giving a number over the phone.
How to read a quote
A complete quote should show these as separate lines:
- Tub out and disposal
- The new pan and waterproofing
- Tile labor
- Who supplies the tile (with us, it's you)
- Plumbing and the shower valve
- Anything extra: niche, shelf, curbless floor
If a quote is one number with no breakdown, ask for the detail. It's the only way to tell whether a cheaper bid is actually cheaper or just leaving something out. A low bid is often missing the waterproofing.
