Shower Tile Installation: What It Costs and What's Involved

The short answer

Tiling a shower costs more per square foot than tiling a floor, and it's not because the tile is different. It's because a shower needs work a floor doesn't — mainly sealing the walls against water before any tile goes on.

The tile labor itself is $15 to $25 per square foot. The sealing, the floor slope, and the shelves or seats are separate lines on the quote.

Why showers aren't priced like floors

A shower is a small space — usually 30 to 50 square feet of wall and floor together. But it's the highest-stakes tile in your house, because water sits against it every day.

Here's the thing most people don't know: grout is not waterproof. Water works through it slowly over years. What actually keeps water out of your walls is a sealed barrier installed underneath the tile. If that's missing or done badly, the damage happens inside the wall where nobody sees it until the repair is enormous.

So a shower quote covers more than tile:

The waterproof barrier. Goes on the walls and floor before any tile. This is the single most important step in the job, and it's completely invisible once the tile is on. It's also the first thing a cheap bid leaves out.

The floor slope. A shower floor has to tilt correctly toward the drain. Get it wrong and water sits in puddles instead of draining away.

The tile work. $15 to $25 per square foot. Small tiles and angled patterns sit at the higher end because they take much longer to cut and set.

Shelves and seats. A recessed shelf or a built-in bench has to be framed, sealed, and tiled as part of the same waterproof system as the walls — not added on afterward.

What changes the price

• Size. More wall and floor means more sealing and more tile hours.
• Tile choice. Big tiles in straight rows go fastest. Small mosaic tile and patterns set on an angle take considerably longer.
• Shelves, seats, and niches. Each one means more framing, more sealing, and a lot more cutting.
• What's behind the old tile. If we take out an existing shower and find water damage, that's extra work — and it's exactly why we look in person before quoting.

Replacing a shower vs. starting from a tub

These are two different jobs and two different budgets.

Replacing worn tile in an existing shower is the smaller one. The plumbing stays, the glass may stay, and it's mostly tear-out and retiling.
