How much does a bathroom remodel cost in NJ?

The short answer
A bathroom remodel with us starts at $9,000 when the layout stays the same. We call that a pull and replace: the old bathroom comes out and a new one goes in where the old one was. A full gut, where the plumbing moves, is priced after a free walkthrough.
Whichever one you need, every quote we write is itemized line by line, so you can see what each part costs before anything is scheduled. See the bathroom remodeling service.
The quick version:
- From $9,000 for a pull and replace
- Demo, tile prep and install, paint, fixture install, a basic trim package and your new vanity set in place
- Usually 1 to 3 weeks
- A written, itemized price before work starts
What the $9,000 starting price gets you
| Part of the job | What it means |
|---|---|
| Demo | The old tile, tub or shower surround, flooring and fixtures come out and are hauled away |
| Tile prep | The wall and floor surfaces are prepped and waterproofed where water hits them |
| Tile install | Your tile is set on the shower, tub area and floor |
| Paint | Materials and labor |
| Fixture install | Towel bar, toilet paper holder and the like |
| Basic trim package | Labor and materials |
| Vanity set | Your new vanity set in place |
Pull and replace or full gut: the biggest thing that sets the price
When someone asks what a bathroom remodel costs, the honest answer is "it depends," and this is the part it depends on most.
A pull and replace keeps the bathroom as it is laid out. The existing plumbing and electrical stay where they are. Out comes the old tile, vanity and toilet, and in goes new tile, a new vanity and toilet, and fresh paint. It is the faster, lower-cost path, and it is what the $9,000 starting price describes.
A full gut rebuilds the room. That can mean moving plumbing, electrical work, adding an exhaust vent, a full trim package, a new door, a vanity with custom templated stone, and more. Every one of those is its own line on the quote, so a full gut is priced after we have seen the room.
If the main goal is swapping the tub for a walk-in shower, you may not need a whole remodel. See what converting just the tub costs, or read how the conversion itself works.
Not sure which one you need? That is what the free walkthrough is for. We look at the room, tell you which side of the line it falls on, and write it down.
A real example: a standard 6x8 bathroom, pull and replace
Here is how a typical 6x8 bathroom prices out, line by line, the way it would appear on your quote. These are ranges for a typical job, not a quote for your room.
| Line | Typical price |
|---|---|
| Demo and disposal, including hauling | about $2,000 |
| Tile prep and install, tub walls and floor | $4,500 to $5,000 |
| Paint, materials and labor | about $1,000 |
| Basic trim package, labor and materials | $800 to $1,200 |
| Set the vanity | $500 to $800 |
| Our work | about $9,000 to $10,000 |
| Plumbing, our plumber | about $4,000 |
| Electrical, our electrician | about $1,000 |
| All in | about $14,000 to $15,000 |
A few notes on that table. The vanity line sits at the top of its range for a double vanity, a second-floor carry, or anything that takes two people. Plumbing and electrical vary with how much needs doing, which is why they are their own lines. And the tile, vanity and fixtures are your picks. See the FAQ below for how that works.
Every line is something you can compare against another company's quote. If a quote is one lump number, ask for it broken out.
Bathroom remodel cost by room size
Size matters, but the scope matters more. Each of these comes back to the same question: pull and replace, or full gut?
Small bathroom remodel cost
A small bathroom that keeps its layout is a pull and replace, and it starts at $9,000. The 6x8 example above is a good picture of it. If your budget is smaller and the room mostly needs new tile, tile prep and install for a shower or tub area plus the floor starts at $5,000. Here is how tile pricing works. We measure at the free walkthrough and put the price in writing.
Master bathroom remodel cost
Master baths vary the most. A master that keeps its layout is a pull and replace and starts at $9,000. A master where the plumbing moves, or that needs electrical work, new exhaust venting or a custom stone vanity top, is a full gut. Room size, layout changes and what the demo turns up are the three things that move the number, so we price master baths after a walkthrough. Planning a bathroom for a parent? Powder room and half bath remodel cost
Tile prep and install for a half bath or powder room starts at $2,000, and demo of the old tile is usually included. A fuller powder room remodel is priced after we see the room, and the same pull and replace or full gut question applies.
What moves a bathroom remodel price
Room size. More wall and floor means more tile, more prep and more hours.
Layout changes. Keeping the toilet, tub and vanity where they are keeps costs down. Moving them means opening floors and walls.
What the demo turns up. Soft drywall or a damaged floor behind the old tile is extra work nobody could see beforehand. It is the main reason we look at the room in person before quoting.
Tile pattern. Straight, offset and brick patterns are in our price. Herringbone, chevron and borders take longer to set and are priced on your quote. Niches, shelves and curbless showers are quoted per job.
Heated floors. Ask us about heated floors.
How long a bathroom remodel takes
Most bathroom remodels take 1 to 3 weeks. A pull and replace sits at the shorter end. A full gut takes longer, and tile and fixture lead times can add to it. You get a timeline before we start.
How to read a bathroom remodel quote
A complete quote shows demo as its own line, then tile prep and install, paint, trim, the vanity set, and each sub's work, plumbing and electrical, as separate lines. It also says who supplies the tile. With us, you pick it. If a quote is one number with no breakdown, ask for the detail. It is the only way to tell whether a cheaper bid is cheaper or just leaving something out.
