Same layout, all new tile

Most of our bathroom tile jobs are a pull and replace. Your shower stays a shower, or your tub stays a tub. The old tile comes out, the wet areas are waterproofed, and the new tile goes in. People call it a shower remodel, a shower replacement or a bathroom retile. It is the same job either way, and it is what this page covers.

We recently had Lucas and his crew from Summit Home Services remodel our bathroom, and the results exceeded our expectations. Lucas was professional, reliable, and easy to communicate wit, he always got back to us quickly and showed up right on time. The space looks beautiful, and the job site was spotless when they finished. I'd definitely recommend Summit Home Services and will be calling them again for future projects!

Lucas and his team helped with a bathroom remodel that we were doing. They were responsible for all tile work, paint, moldings and install of our vanity. In addition, they painted our ceilings in several other rooms. They were completely professional. The work was done on schedule, they cleaned up each day prior to leaving our home, and the work is beautifully done. I would not hesitate to use them again.

Before we quote

Why a shower remodel is rarely straightforward

In my experience, out of every 10 people redoing a shower, maybe one or two are just updating it. The rest have a problem.

You never know how a shower was done before. Something wrong usually means water getting through, so there can be extra work on the subfloor, the framing and the insulation. That is why these jobs tend to cost more. It often means more plumbing work too, especially if the layout changes.

Second-floor bathrooms often can't be reached from the ceiling below, so the goal is to handle everything from above, where the work is being done. Opening the ceiling below happens only if it is absolutely necessary, and that is very rare. Either way, demo goes further than retiling alone would need, to give the other trades access to do their part.

On every quote we prepare for this, and we mention it at the walkthrough. Any work beyond what is in the contract is always documented and communicated to you before we proceed. If we already know there have been water leaks, we expect some extra repairs and put a range or a minimum in the quote, so you know it may come up and are not caught off guard.

Two real jobs, a joist cut almost through and a drain that took half the subfloor: what we find under old showers

If we know there have been leaks, the quote includes a range or a minimum for likely repairs, so it doesn't catch you off guard.

Layouts and materials

Choose your bathroom tile layout and material

Pick the layout and the material for your shower, tub walls or floor, and we set it.

Straight lay

A clean square grid. Works on floors, shower walls and almost any room.

Offset / brick

Staggered joints, like brick. A natural fit for subway tile on walls and backsplashes.

Stacked

Tall rectangular tiles set in straight columns. A modern look for shower walls.

Herringbone

Adds movement to a backsplash or a shower floor.

Chevron

Zigzag lines that make a feature wall or backsplash stand out.

Diagonal

Square tile turned 45 degrees. Works on floors and entries.

Hexagon

A classic for bathroom floors and shower floors.

Mosaic

Small tiles on a sheet, often used for shower floors and accents.

Straight, offset and brick patterns are in our price. Herringbone, chevron and borders take longer, so they are priced on your quote.

Tile materials we install

Ceramic

  • Best on walls, backsplashes and lighter-use floors
  • Fine in a shower when properly waterproofed
  • Easy upkeep: wipe clean, no sealing

Porcelain

  • Denser than ceramic and absorbs very little water
  • Great for floors, showers and large-format tile
  • Easy upkeep: wipe clean, no sealing

Natural stone

  • Marble and others: every tile has its own veining
  • Porous, so it needs sealing before and after install
  • More upkeep than ceramic or porcelain

You pick and buy the tile. We tell you exactly how much to order.

  4. Waterproofed and tiled

Wet areas sealed before tile, then your tile set and grouted.
